Minnetonka

Minnetonka

Family owned and operated for over three generations, Minnetonka has established a reputation for expert craftsmanship, quality materials and distinctive styles that stand the test of time. The company was founded in 1946 by Phillip Miller as the 'Minnetonka Moccasin Co.'

The company started out producing simple footwear, made out of 100% natural materials. The designs were inspired by the Native American Indians. The American Indians called their slipper like footwear moccasins. They made moccasins of animal skin and often decorated them with beads and sometimes bones and other ornaments. Moccasins are soft, closely fitted, and have no heels. They may be ankle length or extend to the knee. American Indians would often leave the hair of the animal on the skin to serve as either a lining or to provide better insulation and warmth. These type of moccasins are referred to today as mukluks. It is fair to say that moccasins are truly America's first footwear.

Following World War II, Americans took to the highways to discover its natural beauty, visiting resorts and souvenir shops, they brought Minnetonka Moccasins home and they they soon became casual classics. Since their inception in 1946, Minnetonka Moccasin have shaped the moccasin's place in the company heritage and our history.
